So no cadet ride to Hawaii. Now I am on a trip to Alaska on the Snohomish. as cook. Was supposed to be back in Seattle on the 15th, then the 25th and now it looks like September. No desert fun for me.
I was warned that Alaska trips could be like this, but it sucks right now. The only week of the year I want off. But, my new journey has priority.
The begining of the trip was awesome. The inland passage is everything I have heard about. Beautiful. Didn’t see glaciers or whales, but did see the famous Seymour Narrows.
After Cape Decision, we went into the open water of the Gulf of Alaska straight into a low and it’s gale. We’ve been tossed around for several days. Cooking has been an athletic event, but as exhausted as I am after my watch, I haven’t slept because I haven’t figured out how to wedge myself into my bunk. To top it off, I can’t seem to please the mate. I dread each morning signing the log in the wheelhouse, as he always has a new problem with me.
Now that I have gotten some real sleep and some perspective, Its all right. Just a mate being a mate. It’s a good lesson in the effect that I could have on someones morale in the job I will have in a few years. I am going to talk to him today and see if I can get it all straightened out. Trying to anticipate what he wants isn’t working, and I do better in a proactive mode than a reactive one.
All in all, this trip has been pretty humbling so far. I will overcome.
